Arguments of Culture

As I was doing research for my blog, I came across a blog called “You all complain about Mexicans, but what about Cubans?” In this blog, the writer argues that although Cubans are legal, under the “wet foot, dry foot” policy they should not be allowed to stay in the U.S. Why does he think this? Well first off he uses a personal observation saying that he has not “met one decent Cuban” and that “most are crooks in one way or another”. However, I believe that this is not only racist but it is a generality towards Cuban people making the assumption that all of them are the same. He attempts to back it up by saying that Medicare fraud is common and hit and run murders are a constant recurrence. But how can he know that all frauds are Cuban induced, but he fails to see that there are other cultures within Miami that are NOT Cuban.

Like him, many people make the argument that the reason why they should be sent back is because they have not adapted to the American Environment. Many of them still “refuse” to learn English therefore resulting in a sort of colonization of the Miami Area to “North Cuba”. Yes, this is a valid argument, Miami has had a great amount of Cuban Influence, but that is what brings the unique environment of Miami. Although they may have not fully adapted to the language, the have been successful enough to bring economic success to Miami and provide a better life for themselves than they would in Cuba. Feel free to look at this blog and see why people are saying they should not be allowed to stay; you may agree or disagree. Tell me what you think.

  1. I think that your approach to this man's comments is very mature. While reading his article I was disgusted with his lack of respect for other cultures and the freedom that America stands for. At the same time, I think that some interesting aspects can be taken from his article. What is the rate of crime in the Miami area, and how does it compare to other large cities in the U.S.? Also, what other minority groups have large populations in Miami?

At the same time, I think that it is interesting that Cuban immigrants are allowed into the U.S. while Haitian immigrants are not. I believe that this policy needs to change. What do you think about the U.S.'s difference in attitude towards different immigrant groups? Should all be let in because there is suffering in their country?

  2. Unfortunately, the crime rate in Miami is higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people there are 20 murders compared to the national average of seven. However crime, rates can be brought down if their is enough enforcement. There are ways to avoid crimes and the people being assaulted at times put themselves in dangerous situations. Their are certain safety precautions people must take. However it is common that in large cities, there will be higher crime rates as a result of their being clear divided classes.

I do believe the U.S. needs to study its immigration policies towards those in other countries. However saying that it would be solve problems would be highly ignorant because their is no way the United States can allow all those in need to immigrate here because it would create an overflow of people. I do believe though, everyone should be reviewed to be given a chance, because when you think about it Anglo-Saxon Americans are also immigrants to this country.

  4. I don't buy the argument that because Cubans are not adapting to American culture, that we should have tighter immigration standards. America does not have an official culture or even an official language. The first argument that you mentioned is also a rash generalization. There are good and bad people of every ethnicity.

  5. I also am in agreement with you on this one. America's greatness is for a large part due to the fact that America is a place where all cultures and peoples are welcome and its our diversity that gives us strength. I think that it is ignorance and an unwillingness to accept others that cause far more problems than illegal immigrants.
